The genus originates from the Old World, but some species have been introduced elsewhere, for example in America.
The length of the pigeon’s wings is between 20 and 27 cm, and their weight reaches 200 - 650 grams. They are mostly spread in Eurasia, Africa and Australia. The rock pigeon is the most widespread species of this genus – it is found in all continents.
The wild rock pigeon was domesticated more than 5,000 years ago. Up to now, pigeon breeders have created more than 800 breeds of domestic pigeons, differing in color, body shape and purpose.
